Starting psyllium suddenly at a high dose is one of the most common mistakes.

Your gut adapts to fibre. If your usual Indian diet is low in vegetables, dal, fruit and whole grains, adding a large spoon of psyllium husk overnight can feel uncomfortable. Some people notice gas, heaviness, bloating or a too-thick drink. That does not always mean psyllium is unsuitable. It may mean the dose moved faster than the gut was ready for.

Begin small. Use a modest serving for a few days, drink enough water and see how your body responds. Increase slowly only if needed. Keep meals steady too. Psyllium should not be the only fibre in a day full of refined snacks and low vegetables.

Timing also matters. Some people prefer morning. Some prefer evening. Avoid taking it immediately with medicines unless your doctor has said it is fine, because fibre can affect how some medicines are absorbed.

The goal is not to impress the label. The goal is to build a routine you can repeat.

Slow fibre is often better fibre. Comfort is what keeps the habit alive.

A gut that has never met psyllium needs an introduction, not an ambush. Give it a week before deciding whether it suits you.
