Fibre and water are a pair. Taking one seriously and ignoring the other rarely works well.
This is especially true for psyllium husk. Psyllium absorbs water and forms a gel. That gel can support stool softness and bulk, but it needs enough fluid. If you mix isabgol into too little water or drink very little through the day, the experience can become thick, sticky or uncomfortable.
Food fibre also works better with fluids. Dal, vegetables, fruits and whole grains all contribute to the texture of gut contents. Water helps the system stay softer and easier to move. Tea and coffee may be part of your day, but they should not replace plain water completely.
A practical habit is to pair fibre changes with a water check. If you add salad at lunch, drink water through the afternoon. If you add psyllium, use a full glass and drink promptly. If you increase dal or sprouts, do it gradually.
People with kidney, heart or fluid restriction advice should follow their doctor's guidance.
For most people, healthy digestion is not only about what is eaten. It is also about whether fibre has enough water to work with.
Before adding more fibre to any meal, check the water first. It is the cheaper, easier fix, and usually the one that is missing.
