Rice does not need to be treated like a villain. But it helps to understand what each grain offers.

White rice is easy to digest and fits many Indian meals, but it is lower in fibre because the outer layers are removed. Brown rice keeps more of the grain and usually adds more fibre, though some people find it heavier or less familiar in taste. Millets like jowar, bajra, ragi and little millet can improve fibre intake, especially when used in rotis, khichdi, upma or dosa batter.

The best choice depends on your routine. If your family eats white rice daily, do not force a sudden change. Start by adding fibre around it. Pair rice with dal, rajma, chole, sambar, vegetables and salad. Try half white rice and half millet in khichdi. Use brown rice where the texture suits the dish.

Grains are only one part of the fibre story. A millet meal with no vegetables can still be unbalanced. White rice with dal and two vegetables can be better than expected.

Choose grains intelligently, not emotionally. Fibre improves when the whole plate improves.

Grain choice is a small lever. Pulling the dal, vegetable and salad levers on the same plate usually moves the needle further.
