People often make constipation a fibre-only problem. That is too simple.

Fibre matters, but the type of fibre, water intake, movement, sleep, toilet routine and medicines can all affect bowel habits. A person may add bran or isabgol and still feel uncomfortable if water is low, meals are irregular or they sit all day.

Another common mistake is adding too much fibre too fast. If your regular diet has little dal, fruit, sabzi or whole grain, a sudden large fibre supplement can cause bloating. Start small and build. Psyllium husk should be taken with enough water. Insoluble fibre from vegetables and whole grains should come through meals gradually.

Food structure also matters. A plate of rice and potato is not the same as rice with dal, spinach, salad and fruit later. Evening biscuits do not help the way roasted chana or sprouts can.

Do not ignore warning signs. Blood in stool, severe pain, vomiting, unexplained weight loss or sudden major change in bowel habits needs medical advice.

Constipation is common, but it deserves a full routine. Fibre is important, yet it works best with water, movement and steady meals.

Fibre is one lever among several. Pull the water and movement levers at the same time, or fibre alone will disappoint you.
